CLP won't support motion against uranium mine
The Northern Territory Opposition says it will not support a motion to oppose uranium mining at the Angela Pamela deposit near Alice Springs.
In the lead-up to the by-election for the seat of Araluen, the Opposition said it would oppose mining there, but it has since changed its position.
Opposition Leader Terry Mills says the Government was wrong to oppose a mine based on public opinion despite granting an exploration licence for the deposit.
He says any mine application needs to follow due process "to allow the confidence in the mechanisms that have been afforded this community and any proponent to bring in economic benefits, to minimise environmental risks, social impacts, to be properly assessed and weighed and considered by a mature and sensible leader.
"We do not have that in the Chief Minister. This will not be supported."
But the Northern Territory Government says a number of leaked emails show the Country Liberals are divided over whether uranium should be mined near Alice Springs.
Mr Henderson says the CLP's Dave Tollner wrote to the Deputy Opposition Leader saying the party had lost support from the business community because of its public opposition to the mine.
"What we have here in Alice Springs is the members for Alice Springs saying to their constituents the Country Liberals do not, will not and will never support a uranium mine at Angela Pamela being overridden by the faceless men, women in central council."
