The CLP Opposition must come clean on their position on Uranium mining in Kakadu, Chief Minister Paul Henderson said ahead of meeting with Commonwealth Environment Minister Tony Burke today in Canberra.

“My Government has always been opposed to uranium mining at Koongarra on the doorstep of the world famous Nourlangie Rock in Kakadu,” said Mr Henderson

“I will be meeting with Tony Burke today and letting him know we support his Government’s position to stop the mine going ahead.”

French company Areva  are attempting to block the Commonwealth Government’s decision to incorporate Koongarra into Kakadu National Park to prevent it being mined.

“While my Government has always had a clear policy position against this mine unfortunately I will not be able to present a bipartisan position to the Environment Minister as no one could possibly know position of the CLP Opposition,” said Mr Henderson.

In September last year a leaked email from Deputy Opposition Leader Kezia Purick to her colleagues said that the CLP had always supported Uranium mining at Koongarra.

In her email she said “I would like to see the Country Liberals develop a clear policy position on uranium mining including (Jabiluka and Koongarra) and not be hung out to dry by popular seeking politics of the Coalition.”

The Member for Katherine, Willem Westra Van Holthe, joined her calls for the CLP to support Uranium mining in Kakadu.

In response the Opposition Leader Terry Mills adopted his usual mode of leadership and went into hiding refusing to comment.

“The CLP have had 9 months since their Deputy Leader called for a clear policy position.  Territorians deserve to know what it is,” said Mr Henderson.

“The reality is that the CLP Opposition are so divided that they are unable to develop policy.  They are divided on Leadership and divided on policy.”
