THE NT CLP OUT OF STEP WITH KOONGARRA

The Environment Centre NT is asking why the CLP are happy to support the nuclear agenda of French company Areva rather than the top end environment.

Senior Djok Traditional Owner Jeffrey Lee last year offered his homelands at Koongarra to be incorporated the Kakadu National Park under world heritage listing. Denying Areva needed permission to mine the 14,000 tonne of uranium deposit.

This week, Jeffrey Lee is in Paris, supported by the Federal Government and neighbouring clan the Mirarr- to affirm his commitment to seeing his country protected forever.

Yesterday the CLP put their cards on the table by supporting Areva’s agenda to mine Koongarra.

“The CLP is clearly out of step with the rest of Australia on this issue, they need to be looking locally as a great opportunity of national interest that is staring them in the face.” Said Cat Beaton, Nuclear Free NT Campaigner at the Environment Centre.

“The Senior Traditional Owner Jeffrey Lee has made a very generous offer to the Commonwealth, the people of Australia, and the world community to expand Kakadu to include Koongarra, this should be welcomed across the board, not used to score political points.”

The Environment Centre welcomes the Government's position in support of Jeffrey Lee for the incorporation on Koongarra into Kakadu and hope to see this election commitment fulfilled in coming months.  .
