Uranium from south of the lake
Lake Mackay is one of the most remote sites of exploration going on in the country.
But drive up the Tanami Road from Alice Springs, just past the Western Australian border and you'd find more drilling going on than you might expect.
It's what Toro Energy call its Theseus prospect and managing director Greg Hall says their latest round of drilling has found some higher grades of uranium.
"The first round was in 2009, and it was only a smaller program.
"Now this drilling program has not only extended the mineralisation significantly but also lifted the grade substantially, and also shown the continuity of the mineralisation.
"We've found thicknesses ranging up to nine metres and some grades ranging up to well over 0.1 per cent."
Mr Hall says the drilling is occurring on the land of the Kiwirrkurra people, who have been supportive of the program so far.
"Some of the local people have worked on our drilling operations as employees."
Mr Hall says the findings are promising despite the recent drop in uranium prices.
"The prices did drop after the Fukushima accident, but the spot price is still 15 per cent higher than last year and the long term price is ten per cent higher than last year.
"The hesitancy in the market is there because of the situation with the global markets it's not there because of uranium prices.
"The big impact is that most new production is either being delayed or is taking longer than planned and that's because a lot of people who have found projects underestimated how long it takes to get them into production."
