Uranium proves explosive issue for Labor
Prime Minister Julia Gillard has indicated that Labor may support selling uranium to India, a move that has infuriated the Labor left faction.
JULIA GILLARD, PRIME MINISTER (at press conference): The Labor Party's current platform prevents us selling uranium to India. I believe the time has come for the Labor Party to change this position.
MARK ARBIB, LABOR FRONTBENCHER (excerpt from ABC News 24): This is about bringing our policy in line with international standards and what is actually the international reality.
JULIA GILLARD (at press conference): I believe that this will be one way we can take another step forward in our relationship with India.
STEPHEN JONES, LABOR MP (excerpt from 7.30, ABC TV): One of the world's most unstable hotspots.
BARACK OBAMA, US PRESIDENT (excerpt from speech): India is a big player. The Australia-India relationship is one that should be cultivated.
MARK ARBIB (excerpt from ABC News 24): When the United States changed its policy in terms of shipments of uranium, well that really made our policy out of date.
BARACK OBAMA (excerpt from speech): I don't think Julia or anybody else needs my advice in figuring that out.
JULIA GILLARD (at press conference): For us to refuse to budge is all pain with no gain.
CRAIG EMERSON, LABOR FRONTBENCHER (excerpt from AM Agenda, Sky News National): This is a policy change whose time has come
(Excerpt from ABC Radio National Breakfast interview):
FRAN KELLY, PRESENTER: The Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd was reportedly furious he wasn't consulted. Why on Earth would the Foreign Minister get left out of a decision like this?
WAYNE SWAN, DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER, TREASURER: I don't think you should necessarily assume that media reports like that are accurate.
(End of excerpt)
KEVIN RUDD, FOREIGN MINISTER (excerpt from 7.30, ABC TV): No I was not consulted.
JULIA GILLARD (at press conference): Well I'm being very clear about what view I will take to the National Conference.
CRAIG EMERSON (excerpt from AM Agenda, Sky News National): The annual ALP conferences are a clearing house for ideas.
MARK ARBIB (excerpt from ABC News 24): Conference is a funny beast.
GRAHAM PERRETT (excerpt from interview): Certainly after Fukushima and some of the concerns that arose out of that, I think people are wary.
STEPHEN JONES (excerpt from 7.30, ABC TV): We should not be adding to the stockpile of weapons grade uranium throughout the world by exporting our uranium out of Australia.
JULIA GILLARD (at press conference): I expect there to be some noise. I expect there to be the occasional sharp word spoken.
GRAHAM PERRETT, LABOR MP: You wouldn't accuse her of being scared of a fight.
STEPHEN JONES (excerpt from 7.30, ABC TV): Like many in the Caucus and many delegates to conference I'll be opposing it.
KEVIN RUDD (excerpt from 7.30, ABC TV): I expect the conference will support the Prime Minister.
JULIA GILLARD (at press conference): The Labor Party is a party of ideas and I expect that to be on display in full measure at National Conference.
