Fear of unsafe waste

CENTRAL Australian doctors do not want radioactive waste to be dumped at Muckaty station because safe transport through the NT would not be "fail-safe".

Medical Association for Prevention of War member Tom Keaney said radioactive waste could be transported through Alice Springs and other rural towns if the material was dumped at Muckaty.

"Transport and storage of this waste cannot be considered fail-safe," he said.

"There is always a risk of accident and escape of radioactive waste into the environment."

Dr Keaney and an Alice Springs-based team of doctors has completed a study into the potential risks of transporting the waste.

They found it would be safer for the waste to be processed where it was produced.
