Wet weather leads to $154m loss for Energy Resources Australia

ENERGY Resources Australia has posted a $153.6 million loss for 2011 and says production is still being hampered by wet weather.

ERA halted production at its Ranger uranium mine in the Northern Territory for more than four months in 2011 because of a heavy wet season.

That forced ERA to source uranium from other parties in order to meet its contractual obligations.

The company's loss for calendar 2011 compares to a $47 million profit in 2010.

ERA said today, it incurred depreciation costs and a higher rehabilitation provision in 2011, in addition to the need to purchase uranium.

The company also cut the size of estimated reserves at the Ranger mine, wiping $99 million of inventory value from its balance sheet.

ERA said production for 2012 remains highly dependent on the level of rainfall over the remainder of the wet season.

It expects uranium production within a range of 3,000 to 3,700 tonnes in 2012, up from 2,641 tonnes in 2011.

Production in 2012 would be weighted towards the second half of the year due to the impact of the wet season, and particularly record rainfall in December, the company said.

ERA shares were down six cents, or 3.9 per cent, at $1.48 at 1027 AEDT.
