Muckaty Station lessee supports nuclear waste dump

The man who leases Muckaty Station in the Northern Territory says he supports building a nuclear waste dump on the property.

Federal Parliament passed legislation this month to build a facility. Muckaty Station, north of Tennant Creek, is the only site nominated after one group of Traditional Owners put forward the idea.

That's being contested in the Federal Court by other Traditional Owners from the area.

But manager Ray Aylett, who leases the station from an Aboriginal Land Trust, says the debate about storing nuclear waste is being fuelled by what he says are lies.

"It'll be in cement bunkers in lead-lined drums, so it's not just dumped on the ground," he said.

"I wish somebody would start telling the truth about it, this is where it's all getting blown out of proportion."

The ABC has contacted several Traditional Owners for comment, but no-one was willing to be interviewed.
