We've got no choice but to accept nuclear waste dump: Mills
Chief Minister Terry Mills yesterday confirmed his support for a nuclear waste dump in the Territory.
Asked by the ABC's Julia Christensen if he supported the dump being built in the NT, Mr Mills said "yes".
He said the Territory had no choice but to accept the facility because of our "constitutional weakness", even though scientists have said the best place for the dump is in outback South Australia.
Barkly MLA Gerry McCarthy said Mr Mills should be fighting against the dump, which is supported by both sides of politics in Canberra.
"We have fought long and hard against it, emphasising the decision must be based on best practice science and after less than three months in government, Terry Mills has decided to support it," he said.
"Terry Mills has suggested our constitutional weakness makes us vulnerable but that is no excuse to roll over, concede defeat and support the waste dump here in the Territory."
